Reading
The reading program includes independent reading, partner reading, reading circles, readers’ theater, and read aloud.

Some of the main skills covered in second grade are:
-
choosing appropriate books
-
using a variety of strategies to decode words
-
reading with fluency*
-
increasing reading stamina
-
deeply understanding the text
-
demonstrating this understanding through discussion, writing, and drawing

*Why fluency matters:
Fluency is the speed, accuracy, and prosody (expression) that a person uses when reading a text aloud. It is also a measure of word recognition automaticity (the ability to recognize words automatically). Fluency is an indicator of potential reading volume and a predictor of comprehension. When students read slowly, it is an indicator of compromised fluency, accuracy, and/or comprehension and the student is probably not well-matched to the level of book he or she is reading.
