The writing program consists of writer’s workshop and written answers and responses to given topics in all subject areas. The Lucy Calkins Teachers College writing series is used to launch the writing workshop. During the course of the year, the students will write small moments (personal narratives), expert/information reports, opinion/persuasive essays, and poetry.

Some of the main skills covered in second grade are:

• writing in complete sentences

• using correct capitalization and punctuation

• generating topic ideas

• using more descriptive words throughout their writing

• rereading, editing, revising written work

• building writing stamina

• spelling red words correctly and applying weekly phonetic rules correctly in daily writing

• incorporating weekly grammar rules into daily writing
